Deaths reported in Belarus after windstorm
July 15, Pozirk. Deaths, injuries and power cuts have been reported after a windstorm ripped through Belarus on July 14.
A three-year-old boy died and six children aged between seven and 13 were injured by falling trees in the Rečyca district, Homiel region, the Investigative Committee reported.
The Homiel region declared a state of emergency, noting that three people were killed and more than 450 buildings were damaged.
In the Mahiloŭ district, a tree killed a five-year-old girl, the Investigative Committee said.
The forestry ministry said it expanded the salvage logging area by 50 percent to 3,800 hectares. Damaged wood is estimated at one million cubic meters.
The Homiel region was hit the hardest with the salvage logging area expanding to about 1,100 hectares.
This morning, the energy ministry reported that power supply was disrupted to 1,960 towns and villages across the country.
