Belarusian riot police teach Tajik counterparts to disperse protests
October 22, Pozirk. The Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs is ready to share “advanced experience in various areas of service,” Ivan Kubrakoŭ told a delegation from Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
The interior minister invited the Tajik law enforcers to see the ministry’s materiel. “The guests examined special equipment, weapons, uniforms and gear of a unit, as well as vehicles of various services of the capital’s police,” the ministry said.
The visit comes as rumors circulate that President Emomali Rahmon is preparing to hand over power to his son Rustam Emomali, and is seeking to purge anyone who could feasibly threaten the transition.
The Tajiks were shown the tactics used by OMON riot police to disperse protests, according to a video released by the ministry. They were particularly interested in the use of drones, the ministry said.
They were also shown products manufactured at the penal department’s enterprises.
OMON has played the key role in in the crackdown on protesters and dissidents, ongoing since 2020.
Belarus has not opened a single investigation into police brutality against demonstrators, although at least 1,800 complaints have been filed.
