Belarus’ top diplomat meets Syria’s de facto leader
January 23, Pozirk. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryžankoŭ has met with Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and Anas Khattab, current head of Syrian intelligence, in Damascus to discuss bilateral ties and regional politics, sana.sy reports.
Belarusian delegation is visiting Syria a few weeks after Alaksandar Łukašenka expressed regret about the ouster of Bashar Assad by the rebels led by al-Sharaa. Łukašenka supported Assad throughout the Syrian civil war, which has been ongoing since 2011.
Ryžankoŭ confirmed Minsk’s readiness to continue humanitarian programs for the rehabilitation of Syrian children and presented gift certificates for 50 MAZ buses to al-Sharaa, according to the Belarusian foreign ministry’s unofficial Telegram channel.
The diplomat also expressed Belarus’ support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders.
