Share of regular Belarusian speakers rises to 11 percent over year – poll

February 19, Pozirk. The share of city residents preferring to speak Belarusian rose to 11 percent last year from 7 percent in December 2023, an independent poll has found.

However, 44 percent spoke Belarusian only from time to time, while 88 percent preferred to speak Russian. Just 5 percent spoke Russian from time to time.

As many as 92 percent of respondent preferred Russian and 44 percent communicated in Belarusian from time to time in December 2023.

The Belarusian Identity in 2024 survey was conducted by Filip Bikanaŭ and Kanstancin Nieściarovič among 800 people of different ages online.
