Belarus’ opposition leader meets with Iceland’s president

October 31, Pozirk. Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja, leader of Belarus’ pro-democracy forces, has met with Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir who took over the job in August.

The politicians discussed ways to alleviate the plight of Belarus’ political prisoners, including prominent politicians held incommunicado, support for the independent media, cultural initiatives and Ukraine, said the Belarusian politician’s press office.

One day earlier, Cichanoŭskaja urges the Nordic countries to reject Belarus’ sham presidential election scheduled for January 21-26.

The Nordic Council – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – suspended cooperation with Russia and Belarus after Russian troops attacked Ukraine in February 2022.
